About Bike Wise

Bike Wise is a nationally coordinated event that promotes safety and biking as a sustainable, fun, healthy and enjoyable means of transport. Bike Wise is funded by the NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Health and is the only nationwide programme of cycling events.

The Bike Wise programme is characterised by three major events - ‘Go By Bike Day’, the ‘Mayoral Challenge’ and the ‘Bike Wise Challenge’, that are held during ‘Bike Wise Month’ where thousands of New Zealanders participate in cycling events held throughout the country.

The secret to the Bike Wise programme’s success is the nationwide network of local and regional event co-ordinators who initiate and produce numerous cycling events under the Bike Wise Month umbrella. They are often community driven and largely staffed by volunteers via schools, regional and city councils, the New Zealand Police, regional sports trusts, businesses, environmental groups, parents, district health boards, health and cycling advocates, the retail sector and more.

Every year tens of thousands of Kiwi’s take part in hundreds of cycling events and activities across the country during Bike Wise Month. The NZ Transport Agency is keen to increase participation in the future.and will continue to do so through the large network of organisations around New Zealand who coordinate cycling events during Bike Wise Month. We will also provide a strategic framework, advice and assistance that includes resources such as coordinator kits, merchandise and generic promotional activities.
