The Bike Wise Battle has been renamed and is now the Bike Wise Challenge.
The Bike Wise Challenge will run from 1-28 February 2010 and is open to any New Zealand organisation (businesses, schools, churches, scout/guide groups etc). The Challenge is a fun, free, online competition which encourages you to swap your chair for a bike saddle and give cycling a go during Bike Wise Month. Organisations compete against others of a similar size in their region to see who can get the highest percentage of members/staff riding their bikes.
It's all about getting people to try cycling, and to think about swapping some car journeys for trips by bike (sorry, excercycles don't count)!
There are fantastic prizes for winning organisations as well as spot prizes for individuals. Registrations are now open on the Bike Wise Challenge website.
2009 Bike Wise Battle
The 2009 Bike Wise Battle was the biggest yet with 663 organisations and 2,683 departments competing nationwide to get the highest percentage of their staff/members to ride a bike.
13,008 people rode a bike at least once during the Battle (1-28 February) making a total of 112,175 trips and cycling over 2 million kilometres! The organisations with the highest percentage of participation won vouchers for a scrumptious morning tea shout (and don't forget the bragging rights!).
If you registered for the Bike Wise Battle, you can continue to log your trips even though the competition is over. Use the Battle website to set your goals for Autumn and Winter, and keep track of how much cycling you are doing, just Log in to your account and continue to log your trips.

"I just wanted to register my thanks for a wonderful programme and competition. For the last 5 years, I have been plagued with knee injuries and have had 6 knee operations during this time. My surgeon was highly in favour of me cycling as it is the best way to strengthen up my knees and while I was sceptical, I gave it a go. My goal was to cycle 50km in the two week challenge. I am happy to say that I managed 112km and despite being a little sore, I am loving cycling and will definitely keep it up. I would have got there eventually but your challenge certainly sped up the process for me. Can't wait until the next one."
"Thanks for organising such a fun event"
"I’ve chased up a couple of our guys over the weekend and everyone has now been out and completed at least their 2 kms. Fortunately we’re small enough, with enough keen bikers, to be able to get the buy in of all the staff and have everyone respond to the challenge. Thanks for your behind the scenes work. Looking forward to next year’s Business Battle."
"Thank you. Bike Wise Week is brilliant!"
"Our office has just over 200 employees and we've been convincing heaps of non-cyclists to jump on a bike specially because of BikeWise. What's especially neat, is that several have since approached me asking where to buy bikes :-) So good on you for pushing this campaign!"
"Great promo and well done on the web site - you must have put a lot of effort into it."
