Auckland commuter campaign a success
More Aucklanders are cycling to work after the Bike Wise to Work trial campaign held in early 2010. Nearly a third of participants were encouraged to cycle to work for the first time and three quarters were still cycling to work after the trial ended.
The purpose of the campaign was to:
- promote cycling as a good transport choice
- explore ways to help people overcome barriers and achieve behaviour change
- encourage people to become long-term cyclists to work.
The competition was supported by a series of emails to participants. Prizes and incentives were offered to those who registered, including a major prize and three monthly prizes. A total of 330 participants completed 6,000 trips and travelled a total of 75,000km over the 12 weeks. Bike Wise may run the trial again in Auckland and possibly other cities or towns.
