Back on Bikes Christchurch

Back on Bikes is about encouraging residents of local communities to get back into cycling and promote safety, opportunities and awareness.

In wake of the Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, participation in cycling has diminished as tracks and roads were damaged. To encourage participation, Back on Bikes will be a series of expos that will be held in quake affected communities throughout Canterbury.

Back on Bikes cycle expos are a joint venture between Sport Canterbury and Bike NZ with support from the New Zealand Police, Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council and the Waimakariri District Council, with a variety of activities including:

  • Free bike safety checks.
  • Helmet fitting service.
  • Information on road safety and safe travel routes.
  • Bike skills sessions for kids.
  • Displays by local riders and “Hero” Riders.
  • Promotion of upcoming events, courses and access to cycling areas.
  • Fun activities to encourage participation.
  • Prize draw and giveaways.
  • Any attendees who cycle to the events will receive a free sausage from the Blue Light Sausage sizzle.

The expos will take place at the following locations:

29th October - New Brighton Ampitheatre, 10am - 1pm
30th October - Kaiapoi Park, 10am - 1pm
1st November - Rolleston Community Centre, 4.30pm - 7pm

5th November - McCormack's Bay Reserve, 10am - 1pm
