Being bright on our roads was a key component for the 2012 Road Safety Week promoted by Brake NZ. Brake NZ is a not-for-profit New Zealand Trust and part of the Brake Charity, an international charity funded solely by donations. Brake NZ supports those whose lives have been affected by death or serious injury as a result of road accidents.

Glentunnel School benefits from Bike Wise programme

Here at Bike Wise it is always great to hear positive cycling stories, and particularly so when the stories involve children. Recently we received a beautiful handmade card from the students at Glentunnel School.

Glentunnel School is a rural primary school in the district of South Malvern, which is based at the foothills of the Southern Alps.

Constable Meg Moynihan, an enthusiastic Police Education Officer, is responsible for delivering cycle lessons to students at Glentunnel School.

Queenstown Lakes District Walk 'n' Wheels a great success

For the second year running, Queenstown Lakes District Council in partnership with NZ Police, Racers Edge, Element, and school communities in both Queenstown and Wanaka, organised the annual Walk ‘n’ Wheels Week.

This was part of a region-wide campaign led by Sport Otago, supported locally by Sport Central. The event highlighted safe journeys to school by encouraging children to walk and wheel whenever and wherever they could – and to do so safely - whether it was to the bus stop or to school. MWH New Zealand Limited rallied together to win first place in the 500+ people category for the 2012 Bike Wise Challenge. One hundred and sixty-five staff members completed 1437 rides and cycled 18641kilometres during February - the equivalent of cycling from Bluff to Cape Reinga nine times!

As winners of their category, the organisation was awarded a certificate and morning tea voucher for the staff that competed in the Challenge; however, Kasey Helford (team coordinator) made an executive decision that the voucher could be donated to another worthy cause. MWH New Zeala

Mount Maunganui Primary gets Bike Wise

Five senior classes from Mount Maunganui Primary took to the streets last week to demonstrate their Bike Wise abilities.

To celebrate the end of Bike Wise month, 170 students, teachers and parents donned helmets and rode down to Pilot Bay for a lunchtime swim, under the watchful eye of Tauranga's award-winning Kids Can Ride instructors.

They had a ball, putting into action valuable road safety skills they'd been taught, as well as having an important community spin-off.

Beca Christchurch Leads Challenge in 100-499 Category

Christchurch-based Beca are keen to keep their trophy, according to coordinator Emily Kelly. Despite it being her first year as Bike Wise coordinator, Emily is finding that the keen cycling community, and a really cycle-friendly organisation, makes the job easy.

“In Beca lots of people are keen cyclists and biking has become very popular as a mode of transport. We had an event last week at lunchtime that involved getting as many people on a bike as we could.

Rotorua BMX riders give it a go at Bike Wise event

Riders of all ages and abilities turned out in force for Rotorua’s ‘Give it a go BMX Night’ held during Bike Wise Month.

Rotorua BMX club members started the night with a safety talk followed by bike checks for all participants’ bikes. Fuelled by positive determination and sporting huge smiles, participants turned into BMX superstars during the evening as they mastered the starter gate and track.

Event promoter, Denise Bradley, from Sport Bay of Plenty said that she was ‘stoked’ with the turnout. Fifteen new BMX riders joined existing Rotorua BMX Club members.

Queues for free bike repairs

Fifty bicycles were returned to good working order at the Bike Wise Big Bike Fix Up on the Whakatane riverbank on Saturday 4 February.

The event was used to fix simple problems like flat tyres, worn brakes and broken gears in conjunction with Bike Wise Month, held throughout February, organiser Richard Hamer said.

He said cycling advocate Kim van der Aa played the role of chief mechanic, with help from himself and Mike van der Boom.

Whakatane business Cheeky Rooster donated $500 worth of equipment, including new brake pads, to help with the fix ups.
