Gisborne will kick off Bike Wise Month early with the BDO Big Bike Fix Up on Friday 27 January 2012. The nationwide Big Bike Fix Up campaign from Bike Wise encourages new and past cyclists to get their bikes out of storage and make sure they are road worthy for the summer. The BDO Big Bike Fix Up event, starting from 9 am at the BMX Club on Lytton Road, will include BMX demonstrations and local bike shop ‘Bikeys’ will provide basic bike checks and mechanics.

New bikes for Cycle Action Whakatane

Cycling has now become a whole lot more accessible to young children throughout the Eastern Bay of Plenty thanks to a donation of children’s bicycles to Cycle Action Whakatane.

The six new BYK Bikes, were presented by Ross Gilchrist, General Manager of Bay of Plenty based Adventure Brands who distribute ByK, Bauer and Jamis bicycles.

First ever fossil-fuel free multi sport event

The event was held on 17th September 2011 and was timed to coincide approximately with world car free day, and a day of action on climate change. Seven participants biked from their homes and converged in Christchurch’s central city for leg one, which was cycling
North, towing their kayaks on trolleys 10 km up Hills & Marshland Road to the Styx River. The ride went without problems, successfully negotiating earthquake damaged roads and busy roundabouts. Motorists were all very courteous to our unusual lineup of vehicles.

Back on Bikes Christchurch

Back on Bikes is about encouraging residents of local communities to get back into cycling and promote safety, opportunities and awareness.

In wake of the Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, participation in cycling has diminished as tracks and roads were damaged. To encourage participation, Back on Bikes will be a series of expos that will be held in quake affected communities throughout Canterbury.

Kids to get bike skills in Taranaki

A Taranaki pilot project to teach pre-school children the skills they need to ride a bike independently has been given the green light after securing Active Communities funding from SPARC.

The pilot is one of six projects awarded Active Communities investment by SPARC. All six projects involve collaborations between different funding partners who have come up with new and interesting ways to get communities involved in sport and recreation.

Most exhibitions ask visitors to ‘look but don’t touch’, but Scott Eady’s project for The Dowse, 100 Bikes: Part 1 features 50 bikes, trikes and scooters that children can ride in the gallery space, activating and completing an artwork through their participation. Intended by Eady as the first part of a larger project, the exhibition opens on 8th October 2011 and runs until 6th February 2012.

Festival of Cycling finds new home

On the first weekend of December every year the Armstrong Motor Group Festival of Cycling confirms Christchurch as the epicentre of New Zealand cycling. But in 2011 the annual event finds itself with the same earthquake woes shared by the rest of the region.

Following the February quake, the traditional Festival of Cycling venues and routes have been unusable. But to ensure the longevity and safety of the event, the north Canterbury town of Waipara has put its hand up to host the2011 Armstrong Motor Group Festival of Cycling.

Bike Wise Month - new and fresh for 2012

We’re getting prepared for the 10th Anniversary of Bike Wise in February 2012 and will celebrate this milestone by launching a new approach and a few exciting changes. We will be focusing on Safer Journeys for cyclists, so you’ll notice a few changes to the usual Bike Wise events.

As Bike Wise has such a high profile it is a great opportunity to provide safety messages around cycling that are so important.
